For more than 50 years, we have proudly served the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area with dependable public transportation. We work hard to make riding the bus an enjoyable, hassle-free experience. Our goal is to make public transit your preferred way to get around town. Review our step-by-step guide to riding the bus below, then watch the how-to-ride video.
Step-by-Step Guide
-
Planning
The first step to riding the bus is knowing the best way to reach your destination. We have rider tools and resources to help you plan your trip.
-
At The Bus Stop
Get to your bus stop 5-10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. While you wait, make sure to stand or sit where the bus driver can see you.
As the bus approaches, check the sign above the windshield to make sure it's displaying the correct route number and destination.
Wondering when the next bus will arrive? Use your phone to track your bus, receive text updates, or call 734-996-0400 for route information. You can also check for service alerts that may affect when your bus will arrive.
-
Boarding & Paying Your Fare
Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop to board.
Pay your fare using cash, tokens, mobile ticket or a pre-purchased or sponsored pass. If you don't have exact change, ask the driver for a change card. Change cards are only issued and accepted on fixed-route buses, and are not redeemable for cash.
Let the bus driver know if you need a transfer card. Transfers on fixed-route buses are free and valid for 90 minutes from the time they are issued.
Discounts are available for youth, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and income eligible residents. Identification may be required upon boarding.
TheRide partners with local employers and educational institutions to offer sponsored passes for people working and attending school in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. These passes give qualified individuals full or partial access to our fixed-route bus system.
-
Riding
Find a seat, sit back, and relax. If you are standing, please move toward the back so other riders can easily board. Listen for announcements on major stops and timepoints. Announcements will also be displayed on the LED sign at the front of the bus.
Please show respect to other riders and follow our rules and policies.
-
Exiting
When your stop is approaching, pull the cord above your seat or push the button to notify the driver. Make sure to gather all your belongings. Exit through the rear doors and use designated crosswalks to cross the street.
If you plan to transfer to a different route, please use a time-coordinated transfer location.
