ANN ARBOR, MI – The getDowntown Program is pleased to announce 375 people joined the Conquer the Cold challenge in which community members opted to walk, roll, bike, carpool, and use public transportation this winter.
The Conquer the Cold challenge ran January 20 – February 20. During this time, participants recorded 12,949 trips covering 40,188 miles without driving alone. Using alternative transportation for these trips saved participants from having to purchase an estimated 3,031 gallons of gas.
“Throughout the challenge, community members found safe and comfortable ways to choose sustainable transportation that worked for their needs,” stated Lilliane Webb, getDowntown Director. “Alternative transportation can be attractive to people who want to save money, enjoy their surroundings, and contribute to a healthier community.”
The challenge offered education, social meet ups, and rewards to support participants. Top finishers earned prizes from Bivouac and H.E.H Human Electric Hybrids.
Upcoming sustainable transportation events include The Commuter Challenge and Bike to Wherever Day in May.
